Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus)木槿

It is a very hardy flowering shrub with a long blooming time from July to November. Best in full sun location. Flowers only on new shoots so it is better with heavy pruning in fall. In spring the shrub will promote new shoots when the summer comes those tips of shoots will be full of flowers. Flowers attract bees and butterflies. Easy to grow and easy to propagate. Normally propagate from grafting, also can be from seeds and from green wood cuttings. USDA Zones:5-9. Mature size:10′-12′(H) x 10′-12′(W) but it is easy to prune to smaller size.

木槿是很強健的灌木,這種木本花卉以全日照為佳,花期很長從7月到11月. 花只開在新枝條所以秋末冬初時可以強修剪,這樣春天會多分枝,夏天時那些於春天發的新枝末稍才會花開滿滿! 花為頗吸引蜂蝶的蜜源. 容易栽培和繁殖. 一般以嫁接為主,使成一株有多品種及花色,也可以種子或新枝扦插的方式來繁殖. 耐寒也耐熱. 成熟植株高約10-12呎,寬幅10-12呎.

Looks familiar. Our neighbor’s Hibiscus syiacus is 15 feet tall and 12 feet wide! It is hardy given we are at 5000 feet above sea level and get temperatures well below zero degrees F in the winter.

Here in Toronto, Ontario is that cold in winter as well, sometimes even colder.

能否请教一个问题，我去年移植了一棵木槿，以前花瓣儿一直是重瓣的，移植后今年开的花居然变成单瓣儿了，真奇怪。我去年扦插的一棵rose也很奇怪，年初刚开时是重瓣儿，现在都是单瓣儿花了。

那是因為是嫁接的植物,通常單瓣的較為強健並較少病蟲害,重瓣的多為園藝品種. 有時或因修剪或因單瓣的基因很強大將重瓣的蓋過,於是只顯現出單瓣的花. 玫瑰的話肥份不夠有可能花的瓣數會減少,花變小,花瓣變薄等. 可以試著在初春時下肥,適當的修剪就能開出漂亮又量多的好品質花朵.

谢谢，明年试着都加大肥。那棵木槿以前在后院，土地非常贫瘠，挖出来时根很小，开花也很少，但都是大朵重瓣儿的，移到前院肥沃土壤里，今年好多花苞，但今天第一朵开了，变成单瓣儿了，估计也可能是花多抢肥造成的。

木槿和玫瑰都是很耗肥的植物.. 也有可能是單瓣強過重瓣的嫁接部份了.

Interesting- I hadn’t realised the common name ‘Rose of Sharon’ is used for this, as I think it’s more usually used for Hypericum in the UK. Shows how common names can be confusing! 😉

Yes, that is why the scientific name is the standard! Chinese common names for plants also can be quite confusing. 🙂

I have a purple one that I grew from a tiny cutting. It has grown so much in 2 years. I recently received cuttings of 2 more purple, 3 white and 3 pink. I am rooting them now and they are doing well.
