1.Use container with lid, fill the potting soil or well drained medium, moist the soil but not saggy.

2.Space the seeds evenly on the surface of soil, do not cover.  Put the lid on and place the container in partial shade warm environment.

3.Keep warm and moist is the key.  That is why keep the lid on.   From 4th day to in a week seeds will germinate.

4.Remove the lid when the most of seedlings are germinated.   Keep the container in partial shade and moist the soil if needed.    Separate the seedlings when the root system is healthy and with more leaves and plant individually in pot or in the ground, full sun.   Do not make the seedlings dry out.

It is better to grow seeds in late fall or early spring.  I prefer in fall because by the time seedlings are ready to be planted in the ground they might soon can flower.  I like blanket flower because they have such long blooming time.   Able to with stand wind and drought tolerant once established.  Many varieties are available in the garden center.   Also different colour!  Dwarf varieties are also available, they are great for garden bed edging!   Their flowers attract bees and butterflies.  🙂

Plant List

Plant List — Here are some plants I can give away or exchange with my follow gardeners.

Each portion of seed usually is 10 or 20 seeds, if seeds are fine and small, will be more of course.   This is not meant for mass planting use, more about learning and having fun so each gardener is only allowed to ask for one portion  of each kind.   Thank you!  🙂

It is very easy to collect their seed pods to get seeds if you or your family have a plant in the garden. Their growth rate is slow so in garden centres or nurseries the price is high. Besides propagation of stem cuttings, propagate them from seeds you can get more. They are spring flowering shrubs, tolerant shade and evergreen through winter. They all like slightly acidic soil.

1.soil/medium must be well drained, use shallow container to sow seeds. If possible, sterilize the soil/medium first.

2.Keep soil moist but too wet. Sow seeds on the surface of soil. Do not cover the seeds. Leave the container where is partial shade. Seeds will germinate in 10-20 days. Will grow the first set of leaves in 8-10 weeks. They are easy to grow but slow, so be patient!

Some kitchen scraps are good planting materials!
Before spring, we can start to grow some vegetable seeding indoors. Actually you can use a short cut. Here are some things I do that you might like.
Green Onion and Spinach — leave the root part a bit longer (5-7cm) for planting, stick them into soil, water and grow.
Beet Root — before you peel them, leave the beet top about 1.5-2cm, place the cut part on top of the soil, water and grow. Beet green tastes like spinach.
Sprouting onion, garlic, ginger, yam and potato — just plant them in soil outside when the weather is warm enough.
Rotting strawberry, blue berry, tomato, pepper — fruit is not good for eating, but their seeds are still good for planting.
Yam stems — if you eat the yam leaves, you can save the rough chewy stems for planting, simply plant the stems in the soil, water and grow.
All these examples will save you some growing time compared with growing from seeds. You will harvest a lot faster than you can imagine.
The most important thing is that you will have less kitchen waste. The remaining kitchen scraps can be composted to feed your garden.
