They are out! 🙂 My great little garden helpers are out, just one by one hatched and emerged from their egg case which their mother laid last end of fall in my garden.

‘The Chinese Mantis (Tenodera sinensis) is a species of praying mantis native to China. Around 1895 the species was imported to North America for biological pest control. ‘ — Wikipedia.

Praying mantises are precious beneficial insects can help in the garden and farm. These egg cases or oothecae (ootheca /oʊ.əˈθiːkə/, pl. oothecae /oʊ.əˈθiːsiː/) one is on climbing rose and the other one is on Clematis.

I hope they will hatch in late spring! Sometimes I still buy couple more just in case if they are not fertilized eggs. Natural insect control for my flowers and veggies is the safest thing to do for your garden! 🙂

Interesting afternoon in my garden

We were having our tea in our backyard in the afternoon, I saw a pair of praying mantis mating, a cicada flying by and making noise, a humming bird enjoy and rest on a humming bird feeder, squirrel was moving her young one by one from old nest to new warm nest back and forth. And I, I enjoyed tea and harvested some garden vegetables!

Here is an article from http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.com/articles/mantid

—-Three species of mantids are recorded in Canada. The praying mantid (Mantis religiosa) was introduced accidentally from Europe to New York, US, in 1899 and subsequently spread to southern Ontario and Quebec. It was later introduced to the Okanagan Valley, BC, to control grasshoppers. The eggs are laid in a frothy substance that hardens into a case and glues the eggs to a twig, fence post or other support. The eggs overwinter and hatch in the spring; adults appear in the late summer.

The Chinese mantid (Tenodera aridifolia) was introduced to eastern North America from China in 1896 to control INSECT PESTS. The ground mantid, (Litaneutria minor) ranges from Mexico north to BC, and is the only native Canadian mantid. In Canada it is known only from the dry grasslands of the southern Okanagan Valley. The males are winged; females are flightless but are agile runners.
