1. Collect ripe good shape acorns with solid weight and no hole. The lighter ones with hole usually with weevil larvae finish eating inside, they are not viable.
1.取成熟無破損有重量感的好種子. 過輕的種子通常內已有象鼻蟲咬蝕損壞是孵不出來的.
2. You will need a good re-sealable bag or pot to fill with garden soil or growing medium, if you are growing a lot just use a big bag. You can use any well drained material as medium or just use soil. I tried covering acorns and not covering acorns to grow, I find they will grow either way but I am impatient so I like to see the progress so I prefer not covering method. Just soak the acorn overnight and put on top of the pot or bag you have soil for growing them.
2.用夾鍊袋或苗盆裝培養土或介質, 如果你一次孵很多種子的話可以使用大塑膠袋裝些土來孵.
3. Moist the soil or medium but not running. Drain away the water if too much. Keeping the moisture for acorns to sprout is the key. Cover the pot or bag. It will take around one month to month and half usually to see them sprout. My experience is white oak group (white oak, bur oak, English oak…) germinate earlier than red oak group (red oak, black oak, scarlet oak…).
3.將土澆濕但不要到淹水的地步. 不小心倒太多水可以將多餘的水倒出或擠出. 保濕是最主要的關鍵. 封好袋子或苗盆後靜置於稍冷的暗處約1-2個月橡實會慢慢發根出芽. 我的經驗是白橡組(白橡,大果櫟,英櫟…等)的比紅橡組(紅橡,黑橡,鮮紅櫟…等)的快.
White oak seedlings grow slower than red oak seedlings. The first year may only have 2-3 leaves. So be patient and have fun! 🙂
出芽後實生苗的生長速度白橡組卻比紅橡組的慢. 頭一年實生苗可能只有兩三片葉子而已.
Most of oak trees are beautiful trees and very useful for our natural environment and human commercial uses except poison oak. Oak seeds — acorns can be uses as food for animals and human consumption. White oak group trees have very dense wood because their wood is so water tight dense it can be use as wine barrels. Oak trees can easily live up to hundreds years!
除了毒橡外多數的橡櫟都是美麗且非常有用的樹,對於自然環境的平衡和貢獻以及對於人類的商業用途功不可沒. 白橡組的木材密度高到不透水所以被用來做為橡木酒桶長年貯存酒. 橡櫟的壽命很長,可輕易活到好幾百年!
