Indian gooseberry (Phyllanthus emblica) 餘甘子
The most unexpected taste of fruit I have ever tried! Got 3 from supermarket today, I was thinking I have heard of this but never taste it so it will be fun experience. Well, different for sure!! 😦 “The taste of Indian gooseberry is sour, bitter and astringent, and it is quite fibrous. In India, it is common to eat gooseberries steeped in salt water and turmeric to make the sour fruits palatable."(From Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phyllanthus_emblica ) I must say the quote is so true…not my kind of fruit. Although the after taste in the mouth soon turn sweet, weird!

My friend gave me one of these to try last year, I didn’t think it would be quite so sour tasting either!
It certainly has unique taste!
I had one once at an Indian restaurant in some kind of pickle. Don’t remember much about the flavor but apparently didn’t feel the urge to run out and find them for myself.
A mix of sour and bitter taste. Water tastes sweet after this. May taste reasonable with a light sprinkle of salt. Mostly used as medicine and for ‘pickling’ in syrup.
Yes, that is what I learned about this fruit. Thank you for your comment! 🙂
wonderful!!
you’re a master of food, flowers and two languages!! plus latin for the plant names.

I don’t know if the Indian gooseberry has the same taste as “normal" gooseberry but if it does, I love it! My relatives had some bushes in their holiday cottage so it brings me memories of my childhood. I love, love, love it! Apparently, in the UK they make gooseberry flavour yogurts. Delicious!
Gooseberry is shrub, Ribes uva-crispa (and syn. Ribes grossularia), which tastes fine, the Indian gooseberry is a large tree. Their fruit taste quite different. I thought Indian gooseberry will be more sour but it is more “different" than my expectation. Thank you for your comment! 🙂
Good to know! I’m not really comfortable in the world of different fruit and veggies… :S It’s always good to learn something new! Now need to find a way to have a taste of this 🙂
You may not like this though… Just give you a heads up! 🙂
try drinking water after having it (either salted and dried or fresh), it leaves a nice aftertaste
Thank you for your comment. Perhaps I will try that next time! 🙂
