Lilyturf (Liriope muscari) 闊葉麥門冬
It is a very easy to grow perennial. Its evergreen, grass like leaves is rather attractive and in fall the flower spikes come out with small light blue/mauve, white or deep blue/purple flowers is very nice! This is very hardy plant which tolerant from full sun to full shade, wet or dry soil. Excellent for big area, rock garden, border or woodland garden.
Mature size: 20-40m (H) x 20-30cm (W). USDA Zones:6-9. Easy to propagate by seeds or often by dividing the plant clump in early spring. Its fleshy roots is medicinal. Slow growing. I like the ‘Big Blue’, ‘Royal Purple’ and ‘Variegata’.
I wonder if it would grow in Italy…It’s beautiful!
It depends on where in Italy… if not overly hot then yes, even in full sun.
If in somewhere hot, it is still fine just have to be grew them in shady, cooler location. 🙂
I live in the North, but in the summer it still can get quite hot, 30° C….It would be probably fine in mid-shade, but then in the winter the temperature can be 1 °C or even below…
It is fine, then. Try partial shade first.
Thank you X…Love all the plants you share in you posts! They are all very beautiful! Have a nice day x
You are very welcome! I am glad you like them. Is there anything very unique (plants) in Italy?
I guess we have several plants from all over the world, but the local plants would be Mediterranean varieties. In Liguria the small town of Sanremo is quite famous for its flowers.
Do you know Orchis italica, commonly known as the naked man orchid or the Italian orchid? It is quite cute! 🙂
I’ve never seen it! I didn’t know we had orchids growing in Italy! It doesn’t grow in the North of Italy though, such a shame! 🙂 There are some amazing wild flowers around…
Orchis italic like this. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orchis_italica
It should be all over in Italy though. They usually flower around April. Perhaps blooming time is short and small flowers so you didn’t notice them before? 🙂
Not really…I’ll definitely have a look in April! 🙂
I will wait for your discovery then! 🙂
I’ll take a picture if I find it 🙂
Ok, in the Italian page they also say that it grows in central or southern regions in Italy (like Sicily), not in the north, we have a totally different climate here….But I’ll definitely have a look! 🙂 Thank you
Check my post of this native orch. https://myfoodandflowers.wordpress.com/2012/07/05/%e5%8c%97%e7%be%8e%e5%8e%9f%e7%94%9f%e8%98%ad%e8%8a%b1%e4%b9%8b%e4%b8%80-%e5%b0%8f%e6%b2%b3%e8%98%ad-epipactis-gigantea-stream-orchid/
This orchid originally from west coast of Canada and south including US but now they are here everywhere, I am just saying plants can be so hardy. 🙂
are they bulbs?
Does the liriope have any weaknesses–for example, too much sun–or does it have low tolerance to watering, that is sensitivity to overwatering–and I wonder about feeding–does it need regular feeding or is it a plant that does not like a lot of food around its roots? By the way–beautiful photos, beautiful plants!! Thank you.
You are welcome! The weakness is the growth rate is slow, so you either plant denser or wait for longer. And it prefers acid or neutral soil, not alkaline soil. Like all grass, mow the grass in early spring then water and fertilize. It is a very hardy plant! 🙂
Never thought about mowing it, thanks for your help.
You are welcome!
It is a wonderful plant and I especially like Big Blue. I like that they can grow so many places.
Me, too! This is easier than Kentucky Blue Grass! Very low maintenance and pretty in fall! 🙂
