Our street is lined with Liquid Ambar trees and I love them so much. Here in Southern California our seasons change with little fanfare, but the beautiful red, orange and yellow leaves of these trees always let us know that autumn has arrived.
Here in Toronto, even though we are in south of Ontario, Canada we are seeing the season changing fast! Bees are storing food in a hurry! Luckily this week we have very nice weather… 🙂
I enjoy picking up the pods from these but have never found one in my neighborhood.
Birds like to eat the seeds. Perhaps someone picked them?
Common in the southeastern US, many do not care for the prickly seed balls that drop. It is a host plant for the beautiful Luna moth, and I love the trees. The sap was chewed like gum by pioneers, hence the name Sweet Gum, I think.
I think you are right! 🙂
We had great fun playing with sweet gum balls as kids…
As chewing gum?
Oh no, we never knew about that. The seed balls are round and just prickly enough to use for childhood weaponry
I see. Its gum/resin can be use as chewing gum, used for cosmetics, perfume, also medicinal…, its seed heads can be medicine. I like its fragrance. I enjoy their beautiful fall colour!! 🙂
Yes, and thank you for posting about the Sweet Gum trees.
You are welcome, thank you for sharing your experience!
