Flowering raspberry (Rubus odoratus)
Also called thimbleberry. Very hardy shrub which bloom purple flowers in mid summer and follow with red edible fruit. Flowers attract bees, butterflies and fruits attract birds. Low to no maintenance. Best in full sun to partial shade location, moist soil. USDA Zones: 3-8. Plant is not prickly but deer do not like it. Some gardeners use this as a shield border. Mature plant height and width: 4′-6′. Self-seed.
I like very much the flavor of this blackberry but the thornless is much easier to pick. 🙂 Raspberry season will soon be finished in this area. And unfortunately we lost most of our blackberry canes. 😦
I like thornless blackberry and raspberry myself, too! This flowering raspberry is mainly growing for flowers even though the fruit is edible as well. It is better for bigger property.
I always saved some seeds just in case winter is too harsh and killed plants– always can use seeds to start over! 🙂 Of course, buying new plants is faster!!
Great points! I wish the thorns could keep the rabbits out. Then I’d plant some!
